1. Wings Over Camarillo is one of Ventura County’s signature summer events. What role does the Department of Airports play in hosting the air show, and why is it such an important event for our community?

The Ventura County Department of Airports is proud to be the hosting venue for the annual Wings Over Camarillo Airshow. Boasting both new and vintage aircraft, military aircraft, an impressive STEM pavilion for young aviation enthusiasts, an aerobatics show, and dozens of locally based vendors, Wings Over Camarillo brings all aspects of aviation to life for Ventura County residents of all ages. Most importantly, the event serves as a pathway to learning for Ventura County youth who may not otherwise have access to such a vast selection of aviation-focused opportunities. The annual event is led by the Wings Over Camarillo nonprofit organization who, along with more than 400 volunteers, runs the annual air show.

2. The Department of Airports has been engaging the community through meetings about airport noise and ongoing planning efforts. Why is community input so important, and what do you hope residents understand about these conversations?

The Department of Airports recognizes the role both Camarillo and Oxnard airports play as public assets. For this reason, the Department of Airports’ team understands how critical it is that all stakeholders, including members of the community, are kept up to date about all things airport related. Additionally, it is vital that we take into account public input when possible to ensure that decisions are made with all stakeholders in mind. The Department of Airports remains committed to making information fully accessible to the public and to ensuring that transparency remains a priority.

3. Many people may not realize how many young people are introduced to aviation at Camarillo and Oxnard Airports. What kinds of STEM and youth education opportunities are available?

In addition to Wings Over Camarillo, and the events’ STEM pavilion in particular, both Camarillo and Oxnard airports are home to a variety of events and youth-focused groups including the annual Aviation Career Day (Camarillo Airport), which is hosted by the Ventura County Ninety-Nines and is targeted toward high school students; Aviation Explorers Post (Camarillo Airport), which is offered through the Experimental Aircraft Association and welcomes youth 14-20 years of age; the Civil Air Patrol cadet program (Camarillo Airport); and the Young Eagles program (Camarillo and Oxnard airports), which is also offered through the Experimental Aircraft Association and is open to youth 8-17 years old.

4. When emergencies like wildfires strike Ventura County, airports often become critical hubs for response efforts. How do Camarillo and Oxnard airports support emergency operations and help protect our communities?

Ventura County Fire Department Division Chief, Nick Clearly, referred to Camarillo Airport as a “game-changer” during the 2024 Mountain Fire, and it became clear in the months that followed that both Camarillo and Oxnard airports have completely changed the way Ventura County’s emergency personnel are able to tackle not only firefighting efforts, but mountain and ocean rescues, medical and organ transports, and more. Camarillo Airport served as a hub for aircraft for not just the Mountain Fire, but the Palisades and Eaton fires as well. Welcoming nearly three dozen aircraft from both locally-based and out of state resources, Camarillo airport’s proximity to the fires made it possible for effective and efficient aerial attacks. Additionally, with Camarillo Airport serving as the home base for the Ventura County Aviation Unit, both Camarillo and Oxnard airports are able to serve as vital resources for Ventura County residents in need of aerial rescues, particularly those located off the coast or along the nearby mountain trails, or those involved in vehicle accidents in remote parts of the County.

5. Beyond airplanes taking off and landing, what is one thing you wish more people knew about Ventura County’s airports and the role they play in serving our region?

Each airport plays a vital role, not just as part of the National Transportation System, but as part of Ventura County’s economic landscape. Camarillo Airport contributes in many ways to the City, community, and County through public services (Fire service, Caltrans, Sheriff) and there are direct economic benefits. The information you are seeing here includes information from our 2019 Economic Impact study, which we will be doing again in the next year or two. At that time the Airports’ contributions included a combined more than $13 million in tax revenues paid between Camarillo and Oxnard airports, with nearly $11 million of that coming from Camarillo Airport. In 2025 alone, Camarillo Airport generated more than $9.6 million in airplane personal property tax revenues that went directly back to the County, City of Camarillo, and the Camarillo public school system, each receiving over $3.2 million.

Additionally, it is important to emphasize that there are a number of philanthropic groups that operate out of both Camarillo and Oxnard airports, each providing services that include aviation-focused scholarships, rides/flights to medical appointments, animal rescues, and youth-focused aviation education.

From advocating for vulnerable community members to offering enriching cultural opportunities, nonprofit organizations play a critical role in improving the quality of life for the residents they serve. Their commitment to serving the common good gives this sector a distinct place in U.S. life.

“If small businesses are the backbone of our nation’s vitality, then nonprofit businesses are the backbone of our nation’s First Amendment,” California Lutheran University President John Nunes told an audience of philanthropists, elected officials, nonprofit leaders and community partners invested in Ventura County’s social fabric. “We organize the civic infrastructure of our nation.”

Cal Lutheran’s The Center for Nonprofit Leadership (CNL) recently examined Ventura County’s nonprofit ecosystem at the launch of the 2026 Ventura County Nonprofit Sector Report. The event marked the official release of the first system-level assessment of county nonprofits’ financial health and resilience. Organizers hoped the report would help nonprofit leaders come together to assess the sector more broadly.

“We hope this report provides a common language for us to all speak about the nonprofit sector’s strengths and challenges,” CNL Executive Director Dena Jenson said.

The launch included an overview of the report’s findings by its author Steve Goodall, former president and CEO of J.D. Power and Associates. He highlighted the nonprofit sector’s growing impact on Ventura County, which generated $3.6 billion in total revenue in 2024, or roughly 5% of the county’s GDP.

The findings show that Ventura County has a strong foundation of nonprofits of varying sizes, working to meet growing demand for their services. However, they also show that these organizations may lack the necessary financial resources to meet expectations. For instance, the report found that roughly 46% of the county’s nonprofits experienced an operating deficit in 2024, the highest rate recorded during the 2019-2024 period studied.

Goodall highlighted that ongoing collaboration among nonprofits, government leaders and supporters remains critical to help organizations mobilize the resources to provide services.

“There is an opportunity for the community to enable the sector to deliver on its potential,” he shared.

The event continued with a panel discussion that reflected on the report’s findings and highlighted opportunities for stakeholders to support nonprofit financial resilience. Moderated by Elena Brokaw, executive director of the Museum of Ventura County, the panel featured Janet Garufis, chairman and CEO of Montecito Bank & Trust; Scott Heimlich, president of Amgen Foundation and Amgen’s executive director of philanthropy; Sevet Johnson, county executive officer for Ventura County; Martita Martinez-Bravo, Camarillo councilmember and executive director for Friends of Fieldworkers; Erik Nasarenko, district attorney for Ventura County; and Drew Powers, Thousand Oaks city manager.

Panelists highlighted ways Ventura County community members can support existing nonprofits to build their capacity. For Garufis, nonprofits should recognize the important role board members play in a nonprofit’s financial sustainability, and consider these factors when evaluating prospective board members.

“You have to grow the financial stability of each institution, and that starts with the leadership of the organization,” she noted. Meanwhile, Heimlich underscored the importance of marketing the sector’s impact to the general public, who might not always recognize or understand the services it provides.

The report’s launch advances the CNL’s mission to offer data-driven resources and training to nonprofit leaders in the Ventura County region. Organizers like Jenson hoped the event would inspire attendees to join a broader effort to support the county’s nonprofit ecosystem.

“We hope that you see this report as a campaign and call to action where each of us will play a role in carrying out an important strategy,” she said to attendees. “These organizations are not peripheral to the local economy — they are essential civic infrastructure and an important part of our county’s economic prosperity.”

Calvin "Cal" Miller Jr., 82, loving father and longtime resident of Camarillo, California, passed away in Ventura County on September 24, 2026.

Cal was born in Oxnard, California, in 1944 to Calvin Miller Sr. and Ina Miller, who preceded him in death. The Miller family came to California from Oklahoma, bringing with them a legacy of hard work and a connection to the plumbing and pipefitting trade that would ultimately span four generations.

After graduating from Oxnard High School in 1963, Cal completed his apprenticeship with the Plumbers and Pipefitters UA Local 484. Plumbing and pipefitting were truly part of the Miller family. His grandfather and uncle also worked in the trade, coming to California to help build and maintain power plants along the California coast. Three generations of the Miller family would ultimately work at the Oxnard power plant—a family history of which Cal was proud.

Soon after completing his apprenticeship, Cal founded Cal Coast Plumbing, beginning what would become an important part of his life's work and a lasting family legacy.

Cal spent over 50 years in Camarillo. He worked hard and had the special chance to work closely with his son C.G. for over 40 years. He also brought his loyal African Grey Parrot, “Peek-a-boo,” to work with him.

Although he worked hard throughout his life, he also knew how to enjoy it. One of his greatest passions was spending time on the ocean, fishing. He fished extensively with his son, C.G. Together with family and friends, they traveled from Alaska to Panama and from Florida to the Bahamas in pursuit of the next great fishing experience. Whether close to home off the California coast or thousands of miles away, being on the water was where he loved to be.

Cal left behind his son, Calvin “C.G.” Miller III, his daughter, Kelly Garcia, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Cal was also preceded by the loss of his daughter Sandy Harris and grandson Hayden Miller.

Cal’s life was filled with family, hard work, craftsmanship, adventure, and a deep love for the ocean. From the plumbing trade that he passed down through generations to the countless days he spent fishing in waters near and far, he built a life that was truly his own.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, coworkers, and all the people whose lives he touched during his 82 years.

On Tuesday, October 6, the Board of Supervisors heard a report on the County’s inter-agency efforts to prepare for a potentially strong El Niño storm season. Staff from the Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services, Fire Department, Public Works Agency, and the County’s Public Information Office shared updates on work already underway to help ensure the community is storm ready ahead of a potentially wetter winter.

Pre-season efforts are focused on reducing risk and ensuring the County is ready to respond quickly if significant storms impact local communities. Preparations include inspecting and maintaining flood-control infrastructure, clearing drainage systems and debris basins, preparing swift water rescue resources, and coordinating emergency response plans for areas at higher risk of flooding and debris flows.

The County’s Public Works Agency has already removed more than 235,000 cubic yards of material from detention basins and waterways in preparation for the winter storm season.

“Preparedness is our strongest defense against severe weather,” stated Jeff Gorell, Chair of the Board of Supervisors. “I commend our County Executive Officer and county leaders for standing up the El Niño Task Force months in advance and taking proactive steps to prepare our communities.

We’re asking residents to do the same – know your risks, protect your property, and have an emergency plan in place. A little preparation now can make a significant difference when storms arrive.”

Special attention is also being given to recent wildfire burn areas and locations susceptible to flooding and debris flows. County agencies are coordinating monitoring needs, operational triggers, evacuation planning, and public warning protocols so actions can be taken quickly as conditions change.

Preparations extend as well to coastal and agricultural areas. The County’s Harbor Department is monitoring vulnerable beaches, evaluating protective measures for areas at risk from high tides and storms, and preparing for winter dredging operations beginning in November. The Department of Agriculture/Weights and Measures is sharing flood preparedness resources with growers and ranchers and partnering with the Ventura County Farm Bureau to host a Disaster Preparedness Workshop for Farms on November 18.

Preparing for winter storms is a shared responsibility. While County agencies are preparing public infrastructure and emergency response resources, residents, and property owners also play an important role in reducing risk before storms arrive.

Prepare your property:

Clear privately owned drainage paths, ditches and culverts, and clean roofs and gutters. For properties along rivers and creeks (red line channels), consider flood protection measures and apply for a no-fee permit if you choose to build protections along or within a river or creek.

Address erosion-prone slopes and areas on private property.

If your property is prone to flooding, sandbags are available at 24 Ventura County Fire Department stations throughout the county.

Review your insurance policies to ensure you have adequate protection to help repair or rebuild your home following flood damage. Learn more about flood insurance at FloodSmart.gov.

Stay informed and ready:

As storms approach, County agencies will transition from preparedness to active response. The Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services will coordinate with the Public Works Agency, the National Weather Service, local partners, and jurisdictions to monitor forecasts and changing conditions. Depending on storm impacts, response efforts may include issuing evacuation warnings and orders, deploying rescue and public safety resources, clearing or closing impacted roads, and activating the County’s Emergency Operations Center as needed.

“As the County’s emergency management agency, our priority is to keep residents informed as potentially dangerous winter weather conditions develop,” stated Patrick Maynard, Director for the Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services. “However, hazardous conditions can change rapidly, and we need everyone to remain alert and aware of what is happening around them. If conditions become unsafe and you can safely leave, evacuate immediately. Do not wait for an official warning or evacuation order if you believe you are in danger. Your safety should always come first.”

The best time to prepare for winter storms is before the rain begins. Residents are encouraged to use the current dry weather to clear drainage areas, address erosion concerns, build sandbags if needed, prepare emergency kits and make sure their households are equipped with supplies should they need to stay in their homes for several days or that they have “go bags” ready if they receive evacuation orders.
