PRESCOTT, AZ (AZFamily) — Federal investigators released a timeline Tuesday of what led up to a deadly plane crash near Prescott earlier this month, but no clear cause was found.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), an unidentified 64-year-old pilot took off in a Socata TB21 from John Wayne Airport in Southern California just before 5 p.m. on Feb. 4 and headed toward Prescott Regional Airport.

Around 7:44 p.m., the pilot radioed the Prescott tower, telling the tower he intended to land, the report said.

The tower told the pilot to maintain altitude above 6,500 feet, pass over the airport and enter the runway downwind.

The pilot acknowledged and flew over the airport around 7:47 p.m. Then the tower told the pilot the altitude restriction was canceled, extended the downwind and said it would call for a base turn.

About 46 seconds later, the controller cautioned the pilot about how close he was to another plane about to land, and the pilot acknowledged.

At 7:49 p.m., the controller cleared the pilot, who was about 3 miles away, to land.

According to the report, during the left turn on his way to land, the plane dropped about 800 feet and sped up by 58 knots in only 16 seconds.

At around 7:51 p.m., the plane disappeared from radar.

The wreckage was found about 3 miles northeast of the approach end of the runway.

Investigators said they found the wings and the engine separated from the plane, with the fuselage inverted. The evidence indicated the engine was running at impact.

The report said visibility was 10 miles and skies were clear.

The final NTSB report is expected in one to two years.

One hundred and thirty years later, the Sisters of Mercy’s pioneering spirit and founding principles continue to actively guide YRMC. When the opportunity arose to affiliate with Dignity Health in 2020, YRMC recognized a profound alignment. Dignity Health, which was founded by the Sisters of Mercy and the organization’s commitment to its core values – respect, justice, compassion, stewardship, and excellence – resonated deeply with YRMC’s history and mission. There are also physical reminders of the Sisters enduring presence in Yavapai County. The original hospital’s stained-glass windows that were spared from the fire have been installed in Prescott Valley’s Chapel of the Valley, helping to remind the community of the lasting impact the Sisters of Mercy established 130 years ago.

Gas prices fluctuate based on several factors, including the cost of the key ingredient, crude oil, as well as the available supply and demand for gasoline. If the price of oil rises, a major refinery goes offline, or more drivers are hitting the road, for example, then the cost will increase.

In the first half of 2022, a unique confluence of events led to a surge in gas prices. The increased demand stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and a slowdown in oil production all contributed to a national all-time high of $4.93 per gallon on average in June 2022.

Seasons also affect gas prices. Demand tends to drop in winter, but the cost also falls because gas stations switch to a different blend of gasoline that's optimal for lower temperatures—and has cheaper ingredients.

Location also matters. The South and Midwest tend to have the lowest gas prices, while the West, including Hawai'i, has the highest. Californians, in particular, pay more for gas on average than any other state. That's because of its high state excise taxes; its isolation from the country's major pipelines, which causes supply issues; and its requirements that mandate a more environmentally friendly blend of gas that costs more to produce and adds to the price per gallon.
