Folsom, a Gold Rush-era city near Sacramento, topped the state's rankings, but missed the national top 100, coming in 119 out of 250 major cities across the U.S.

The city knocked Palo Alto off the top spot in California in the 2025 survey. (Folsom finished 2nd in that survey.)

The latest rankings evaluated the country’s top cities based on public data and consumer insights, with top-ranking cities scoring high in criteria such as quality of life and desirability.

U.S. News surveyed thousands of people across the nation to find out what they valued in deciding where to live, and pulled data from internal sources as well as data from government agencies, including the U.S. Census Bureau, the Department of Commerce, the Federal Reserve, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and state and local sources.

Cities in Texas, Indiana, and North Carolina made up seven of the nation's Top Ten, with Johns Creek, Georgia, coming out on top.

“We are blessed with a great community and it’s always nice when others recognize that,” said Johns Creek Mayor John Bradberry in a press release. “The Council and I will continue to focus on delivering value and a strong quality of life for our residents.“
