FAIRFIELD, Calif. —

The City of Fairfield Housing Authority is opening its rental assistance waitlists for a short period this week, offering residents an opportunity to apply for housing support for the first time in several years.

The lists for both the Housing Choice Voucher program — often referred to as Section 8 — and project-based vouchers will be available beginning March 4 at 9 a.m. through March 6 at 5 p.m. Officials say the window could shut down sooner if the maximum number of applications is reached.

The Housing Choice Voucher program allows qualified households to use federal rental assistance in privately owned units, while project-based vouchers are connected to specific apartment communities in Fairfield.

Housing officials emphasize that submitting an application does not mean immediate assistance. Once the window closes, names will be chosen through a lottery system. Those selected will then go through an eligibility review before being formally added to the waiting list.

For the Housing Choice Voucher, 2,500 applicants will be selected through a lottery. Laurel Gardens will accept 100 one-bedroom and 200 two-bedroom applicants. Sunset Creek will take 100 one-bedroom, 300 two-bedroom, and 300 three-bedroom applicants. Gateway Village will accept 300 two-bedroom and 200 three-bedroom applicants.

“There’s definitely a need for housing. It’s in high demand,” Miesha Garnett with The City of Fairfield Housing Services Department told KCRA 3, adding that many families are seeking stable, affordable places to live.

Applications must be completed online, and an email address is required. A Social Security number for the head of the household and current mailing address will be asked. Community partners will offer computer access for residents who need assistance applying.

Fairfield's longtime Budweiser plant by the end of February.

City officials were informed by Anheuser-Busch back in December about the impending closure.

In a statement from Anheuser-Busch, the Fairfield facility is one of two that will be closed in 2026, along with a third being sold.

Full-time employees at the impacted facilities will be offered roles elsewhere, Anheuser-Busch stated.

"Over the last five years we have taken steps to update and modernize our U.S. manufacturing operations, investing nearly $2 billion in our 100 facilities across the country; after conducting a thorough review, we have decided to sell our Newark, NJ facility to the Goodman Group and to close our facilities in Fairfield, CA and Merrimack, NH in early 2026," the company stated.

According to the WARN report, the last day of operation for the Fairfield plant will be Feb. 22, 2026. A total of 238 employees will be impacted.

The plant's wind-down was expected to begin on Feb. 9.

Fairfield Mayor Catherine Moy stated that the city manager informed her Thursday morning of the plant's impending closure.

"The impacts for us will be loss of local employment and impact to our water utility operations and revenue. I requested that they put me in touch with their real estate team so that we can promptly get to work on trying to find a potential reuse for the site," Moy wrote in a post to her Facebook page regarding the closure.

"To be clear, I don't think that will be an easy task given the large and highly specialized nature of the facility. I hope I'm wrong though," Moy added.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office pushed back against claims that the state's business environment contributed to the closure.

"The company and the industry as a whole are experiencing profit declines, made worse by economic uncertainty and higher costs tied to President Trump's tariff policies," a representative from Newsom's office stated.

The Fairfield Anheuser-Busch was opened in 1976 and sits on a prominent 170-acre site right off Interstate 80.
