Alamogordo, NM – High school cheer teams from across Otero County and southern New Mexico took the floor at the 2026 NMAA State Spirit Championships held Saturday, March 21 at The Pit in Albuquerque.

Tularosa High School delivered the best local performance of the weekend, finishing on the podium with a strong 3rd place in the 3A division (total score 138.83). Alamogordo High School competed in the large-school 5A division, placing 10th with a score of 155.1.

• Limit exercise: Do not overexert pets in the heat. Keep activity light and during cooler morning or evening hours.

• Never leave animals in cars: Even for “just a few minutes,” parked vehicles become extremely dangerous. If your plans involve leaving a pet behind, it is always safer to leave them at home.

• Provide constant fresh water: Animals need unlimited access to clean, cool drinking water at all times—especially important in New Mexico’s arid environment.

• Ensure proper shade: Give animals open shade with good air circulation and ventilation. A doghouse is not sufficient—it can trap heat and become dangerously hot. Many New Mexico counties and cities have ordinances requiring adequate shade.

One person is dead and another person was injured following a shooting that caused a lockdown of Holloman Air Force Base near Alamogordo, New Mexico, officials said.

The base went into a lockdown about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, following reports of an active shooter, the Holloman Air Force Base 49th Wing Public Affairs office said in an email to the El Paso Times.

"The lockdown was lifted shortly thereafter when security forces personnel confirmed that the scene was safe," the 49th Wing Public Affairs stated, adding that there was no longer a threat.

The domestic-related shooting occurred near the base Shoppette store resulting in the wounding of an active-duty service member and the death of a person who was a civilian and veteran previously assigned to Holloman Air Force Base, the 49th Wing said in an update Wednesday. The two persons were not married.

Names have not been publicly released. "We ask that individuals avoid speculating on social media regarding the incident out of respect for the families involved," the Air Force Base's public affairs office added.

The injured person was transported for medical treatment. The extent of their injuries was not disclosed.

Further details regarding the shooting were not immediately disclosed as an investigation continued Wednesday.

The 49th Wing trains F-16 fighter and MQ-9 Reaper drone pilots. Holloman Air Force Base is located about 90 miles north of El Paso and about 60 miles east of Las Cruces.
